Following our successful bid for Freeport status, the Welsh and UK Governments have now approved the Full Business Case for Anglesey Freeport. This will shortly unlock £25mil in Government seed capital, enabling the establishment of the Freeport as a business entity.
Anglesey Freeport provides a unique investment opportunity for businesses considering their future operations, as well as bolstering Anglesey’s vibrant island economy and the prosperity of communities across North Wales.
Anglesey Freeport is committed to delivering upon the Welsh and UK Government’s shared objectives around the broader freeport programme, including in ensuring the Freeport operates as a hub for global trade, innovation and investment, supporting local talent and embracing new employment opportunities.
Spearheaded by the principal partners of the Freeport – Stena Line and Isle of Anglesey County Council – Anglesey Freeport will help support the economic prosperity of the North Wales economy, providing employment and social benefits which help support the development of local communities. The Freeport’s exclusive customs and tax arrangements, local talent, prestigious education and skills establishments – as well as unwavering commitment to research and innovation – make it not only the perfect partner for businesses of all size, but also central to the long-term competitiveness of UK plc.
Anglesey Freeport principal partners and its governing board will ensure that the Freeport complies with the strict employment guidelines and regulations as set out by the Welsh and UK Government’s. In particular, the Freeport will continue to be compliant with the Welsh Government’s net zero commitments as well as the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act of 2015.
We are pleased that the UK and Welsh Governments have now approved the Full Business Case (FBC) for Anglesey Freeport. This follows the approval of the Freeport’s outline business case earlier in the year, which designated two major tax sites across the island. With both business cases approved, all required approvals are now in place, with the Freeport able to transition to its delivery phase. The approval of the Full Business Case will shortly unlock £25mil in Government seed capital, enabling the establishment of the Freeport as a business entity. Approval of the North Anglesey Tax Site is expected later this year.
Anglesey Freeport enjoys exceptional backing from the Welsh and UK governments, with initial seed funding of up to £26m to ensure its success. This endorsement was evident during the Freeport’s announcement, which was attended by the then-Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, then-First Minister, Mark Drakeford, and then-Secretary of State for Wales, David TC Davies.
The Freeport has received major local and bi-partisan political support. Over 2,000 local residents have registered their support for the project, over 400 writing to support the bid, recognising that for too long Anglesey has been deprived of economic investment. The Freeport has also received support from the Welsh Government, the previous Conservative UK Government and from Plaid Cymru.

“Freeport status on Anglesey would attract innovative technologies and industries to North Wales, and create an opportunity for these industries to be powered by clean energy from the outset.
Specifically, freeport status for Anglesey would influence Last Energy to consider the area for its first SMR deployment, bringing £1.4 billion of investment to the area.”

“While Anglesey at present remains attractive to long-term investment, the addition of the proposed freeport would enhance its offer to our business and reinforce its position as an area of further investment from developers and associated supply chain companies.
Specifically, we would be looking to attract investment more than £20 million in order to build, deploy and service the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub on Anglesey.”

“We are of passionate belief that The Tidal Stream industry prospectus in Holyhead is REAL. Having navigated consent, and being now on target to complete the £32m of infrastructure works by October 2023, the Freeport application becomes a hugely influential component in maximising economic benefit for Wales and the UK.
This is innovation in a known growth area of the economy. It is a perfect fit for industrial strategy and provides the UK with a rare opportunity to establish itself as a world leader in innovative marine renewables.”

Rolls-Royce SMR
“While Anglesey at present remains attractive to long-term investment, the addition of the proposed freeport could enhance its offer to our business.
A single Rolls-Royce SMR will produce 470MW of electricity output, providing a significant draw to energy intensive users who may also see tremendous value in the establishment of freeport status. We look forward to working with you to power the island and ensuring new investment and innovation continues to be attracted to Anglesey.”

“While Anglesey at present remains attractive for a new nuclear power project, the addition of the proposed freeport would support the Council’s proximity principle of economic benefit for Wylfa Newydd.
A large-scale AP1000 plant project at this site brings the potential for Anglesey to be a UK nuclear technology hub that attracts a cluster of supply chain businesses; these businesses would locate initially for the project and can then form the basis of a future export hub for new projects in the UK and overseas. Establishing a freeport on the Isle of Anglesey would further enhance the attractiveness of the site given the potential financial and economic benefits to the project.”

Assystem
“Assystem’s support for the proposed new nuclear power station at Wylfa Newydd is well established. We are keen that the UK government continues to support the conditions to attract the latest technologies and innovations to North Wales. Indeed, Anglesey and North Wales understand the value of new nuclear for jobs, growth, energy security and prosperous communities.
While Anglesey at present is attractive to long-term investment, a new freeport would enhance its offer to our business and reinforce its status as a location for potential investment by our company. Plans are underway for Assystem to open an office in North Wales in 2023 bringing new opportunities to the area. As such, we support the proposal for a proposed freeport on Anglesey.”
